NHRC issues notice to West Bengal government over deaths in Malda firecracker blast

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued notice to the government of West Bengal over death of two persons in a firecracker blast at Malda of West Bengal.

Taking sou motu cognisance of a media report, which said that two persons had died in a blast in Malda town on May 23, the Commission observed that the contents of media report, if true, amounted to violation of human rights of the victims.

It directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, West Bengal to submit a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.

The Commission directed the senior officials to include the status of FIR registered by the police, medical treatment of victims and compensation, if any, granted to the next of kin of the deceased and the injured.

The Commission further sought information on the action taken against the delinquent officers responsible for the tragedy.

The rights body further took cognisance of the locals alleging that illegal hoarding of firecrackers and carbide could be seen just a few meters away from a police post and the Municipality.

The media report further said that three such blasts had happened in the state in the past eight days, resulting in the death of 16 people.

The rights body observed that apparently, there was a lack of supervision by the state authorities, which was resulting in such repeated incidents within a short period.
