Supreme Court rebukes Delhi government over delay in Delhi Meerut Rapid Metro project seeks records of amount spent on RRTS advertisements

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily upon the Delhi government for delaying the implementation of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project.

The counsel representing the Delhi government apprised the Bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul that it was unable to allocate funds for the project.

The Apex Court questioned the AAP-led government as to why it did not have funds for a project that would ensure smooth transportation, considering it had allocated funds for advertisements.

Noting that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government had spent considerable amount on its advertisements, the top court of the country asked as to why it didn’t give money for a project that would ensure smooth transport.

The Bench then directed the Delhi government to place on record a detailed account of its spending on advertisements for the RRTS in the past three financial years.

The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is a semi-high-speed rail corridor that is currently being constructed. This corridor will connect the cities of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. It is one of the three rapid rail corridors planned under Phase I of the RapidX project.
