Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, Senior Advocate KV Viswanathan sworn in as Supreme Court judges, Apex Court back to full strength

Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Senior Advocate Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan took oath as judges of the Supreme Court on Friday.

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new judges.

The ceremony was livestreamed on the website of the Apex Court.

With their appointment, the strength of the top court of the country rose to 34, which is its sanctioned strength.

The Supreme Court Collegium had passed a resolution on May 16, proposing elevation of Justice Mishra and Senior Advocate Viswanathan.

Acting swiftly on the recommendation, the Union government notified their appointments on May 18.

A notification was issued in this regard by President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday, while newly-appointed Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made the announcement on Twitter.

Born on May 16, 1966, Viswanathan on Friday became the 10th lawyer to have directly been appointed from the Bar to the Supreme Court Bench. He will serve in the capacity of an Apex Court judge till May 25, 2031.

On the retirement of Justice J.B. Pardiwala on August 11, 2030, he will be in line to assume the office of Chief Justice of India till his retirement on May 25, 2031.

He will also be the fourth lawyer to become the CJI, following Justice S.M. Sikri, Justice U.U. Lalit and Justice P.S. Narasimha.

The former Additional Solicitor General has been in the profession for more than 30 years and has appeared in a number of high-profile matters.

He worked as a junior in the chambers of Senior Advocate K.K. Venugopal, who later became the Attorney General for India

In April 2009, Viswanathan was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme court.

Justice Mishra was the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, when he was recommended for elevation to the top court of the country.

Justice Mishra was appointed as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 13, 2021.

He has also served as a judge of his parent High Court, the Chhattisgarh High Court, for 12 years and later became the Acting Chief Justice of the same.
